Lake Bled in the twighlight

Medaille Trust International Criminal Justice Conference 2019 – Day 1

We’ve arrived! After hours in trains, planes and automobiles we all arrived in Bled, Slovenia, yesterday evening. Met by blue skies, surrounded by towering alpine mountains and bowled over by the quaint architecture and majestic lake, this is the perfect place for a holiday.

But we’re not here for a holiday. We’re here to combat human trafficking and modern slavery.

This is the first day of Medaille Trust’s 6th annual international criminal justice conference – pulling together Law Enforcement Modern Slavery Experts from the UK, Albania, Sweden, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania and Slovakia.

This year’s theme is “Partnership Working: what works and how can I help?” and our aim is to build connections, networks and strategies together to combat modern slavery across Europe – especially the trans-national element of slavery gangs.

We have high hopes, as previous conferences have proved to be highly impactful. Two favourite outcomes from our 2018 conference were:

  • A UK police force reviewed its victim handling procedures, resulting in a better victim experience and improved rates of prosecution
  • Two pieces of complex international casework were positively resolved.

We’re looking forward to a packed couple of days where the impact will be felt for years to come.
